The Tour
Duration: 4 hours (includes lunch)
Belize was once home to more than 2 million Mayas with a legacy known for sacred temples, pyramids, palaces, advanced science, agriculture, and mathematics. Multiple sites exist today to educate and share that knowledge with future generations. We offer various tours to some of the largest sites and our guides have boundless information to share with you about the rich history of the Mayan people. Altun Ha is one of these ancient sites that did not come to the attention of archeologists until 1963, although it had been occupied for many centuries, from about 900 B.C. to A.D. 1000.
The most significant find of Altun Ha is the “Jade Head”, which represents the Mayan Sun God, Kinich Ahua. This is the largest object known in the Maya civilization to be carved out of jade. The largest of Altun Ha’s temple-pyramids, the “Temple of the Masonry Altars”, is 52 feet high, and a drawing of this structure is the logo of Belize’s leading brand of beer, “Belikin”.
Altun Ha is located 31 miles north of Belize City on the Old Northern Highway. The area around the site is rich in wildlife including armadillos, bats, squirrels, agouti, paca, foxes, raccoons, coati, tyra, tapir and the white-tailed deer. Two hundred species of birds have been recorded and there are large crocodiles that inhabit the Maya-made water reservoir.

Images of Altun Ha
“Jeevan is an incredible adventure guide. He’s personable, knowledgeable and has an outstanding sense of humor. I learned so much about Belize’s history; Mayan history and culture; plants and animals; and current cities and neighborhoods of Belize while on several adventures with Jeevan. We did the Altun Ha ruins, cave tubing, zip lining, zoo and the Howler Monkey Sanctuary with him and he shared so much information with us, it was fantastic. I can’t recommend Belize Raindrops Adventures more. Do yourself a favor and book something with him today!”

Tour Tip
There are some great vendors at the exit of this ruin, be sure to bring some cash to pick-up a nice souvenir or two. Most sites do not have credit card processing cabilities.
